What is a medical alarm?
Medical alarms, also known as medical emergency response systems, personal alarms for the elderly and medical alerts let you call for help in an emergency by pushing a button. A medical alarm has three elements: a wireless pendant, a base unite connected to your landline telephone, and friends and family ready and able to respond to the emergency calls.
Medical alarm pendants, or emergency pendants, are battery powered lightweight devices. You can wear one around your neck, on a wrist band, on a belt, or in your pocket. In the event of an emergency, you press the pendants help button, which sends a wireless signal to the base unit. The base unit automatically dials one or more pre-programmed friends and family telephone numbers to alert them of the emergency. Some medical alarms are programmed to telephone an emergency response centre. This is a 24 call centre which you normally pay a significant monthly service charge or fee. Research shows seniors are less likely to push the button in the event of an emergency when it is connected to a call centre as they do not want to speak to a stranger and do not want to ‘bother’ anybody. Seniors are much more likely to use the medical alarm when they need it if it will dial friends and family.
The SureSafe Personal Emergency Call System calls family members and friends – the medical alarm is programmed with up to 3 telephone numbers. Family and friends based medical alarm systems can be good because the calls have no ongoing monthly monitoring fees – all you pay is the one-off purchase price and there are no contracts to sign. GST and Express postage are included!
When your family or friends answer the call they will hear a pre recorded voice message and will immediately know that you need assistance. Should you be within 3 meters of the medical alarm base unit they may then be able to speak to you, although this is not necessary in order to let them know that you need help.
Your family and friends will be able to receive your calls for assistance anywhere they have a fixed or mobile phone service, even if they are out of the house e.g. shopping. Calls to answering machines and voice mailboxes will not be counted as a successful call, and the medical alarm moves on to the next number saved.
The SureSafe medical alarm can also call family and friends if the mains-power has been disconnected, the unit has back-up battery power for such events. In addition the unit has an LED indicator to let you know when the batteries are low.
